The impact of Sierra Leone’s eleven-year civil war in the 1990s left a lasting mark on the country’s infrastructure, including its education system. The devastation was so extensive that many children, even those currently enrolled in private schools, lack basic literacy skills. At EKMOI, we’ve seen how these challenges have affected our children’s ability to learn and thrive.
To address this critical issue, we introduced the Hooked on Phonics program to Sierra Leone. Originally designed for younger children, this program has proven invaluable for our students, many of whom are teenagers who never had the opportunity to build foundational reading skills.
This program helps bridge the gap, providing structured, engaging lessons that make learning to read accessible and effective, regardless of age. It’s heartbreaking yet inspiring to see our children, determined to catch up, engage enthusiastically with these materials.

Here’s a glimpse of our children participating in the Hooked on Phonics program, proudly reading from one of their books. Their progress is a testament to their resilience and the transformative power of education.
Through your continued support, we aim to expand this program and reach even more children who deserve the gift of literacy. Thank you for being part of this journey.
