May 2024 marked 11 months and two weeks of dedication to the EKMOI Children’s Home project, and the progress has been remarkable. One of the major milestones achieved is the completion of a 12-foot perimeter fence, ensuring the safety of our children and staff. Two large gates, located at the upper and lower ends of the property, further enhance security.
Inside and outside the building, we’ve successfully tiled 15,000 square feet, with more exterior spaces awaiting future projects. The building is now painted both inside and out, with only a few rooms left due to the temporary storage of supplies.
An exterior bathroom with three toilets and a shower has been added for the children’s convenience while playing outdoors. Adjacent to this, a storage facility and a chicken coop have been constructed, aiming to provide fresh eggs and reduce food expenses.
Our focus on safety is evident in the reinforced guards on every window, and future plans include installing solar panels and a backup generator to address the lack of electricity in the area. Additionally, we continue to invest in the children’s education, with 80% of them attending private schools to ensure they receive the best possible learning opportunities.
Inside, the building is taking shape. The reception area and administrative office are ready for use, while the kitchen awaits tiling and cabinet installations. Separate living spaces for boys and girls have been designed for privacy and security, and the children’s bedrooms are equipped with guards and painted walls.
Despite these achievements, much work remains. We still need 3,000 bags of cement to level the grounds, complete the tiling, install doors, and finish the kitchen. Transportation for the children remains a challenge, with a pressing need for a bus to reduce multiple trips to and from school.
