Sierra Leone is located in West Africa. It is in the process of recovering from an eleven year civil war (1991-2002). The root cause of the war was Blood Diamonds, which refers to the exploitation of the Alluvial Diamond Miners in Sierra Leone and neighboring countries. These miners worked for low wages, while the diamonds were smuggled and illegally traded for huge profits. The rebels used the profits from the diamonds to buy weapons to support the war.
The Sierra Leone civil war had devastating effects on it’s citizens. Over 50,000 people were killed and 2.5 million internally displaced. Many of those who survived the war are disproportionately children who suffered from being kidnapped, forced to be sex slaves, child soldiers, raped, amputated and tortured. The country still suffers greatly from a collapsed educational system, diminished food supply and economic instability. Employment and job skills training opportunities disappeared. The current needs that we seek to address are:
- Food Supply
- Stable Housing
- Medical & Mental Health Services
- Spiritual Counseling
- Education & Job Skills
